Your challenge
For one of its growing port partnerships in the Middle East, Port of Antwerp Bruges International (POABI) is looking for an experienced Chief Operations Officer / Harbor Master to lead and oversee port and nautical operations.
In this role you will ensure the daily safe and efficient operations of the port. Additionally, you will lead a team of approximately 5 direct reports, which in extend, means that you will lead various teams with both expert and more executive profiles. Overall, the extend of your team will reach up to a of approximately 80 people. You will be part of the leadership team, and together with your colleagues, you will contribute to the future of one of the region’s most ambitious port projects.
As Chief Operations Officer (COO), you will be managing the day-to-day operations of the port facilities. You will ensure the seamless coordination of all port and marine operations while driving efficiency, safety, and profitability.
Some of your responsibilities as Chief Operations Officer:
• Focus on continuous improvement in the entire port area and implement a system and process driven approach to port growth
• Ensure statutory and legal compliance with HSSE regulations and create a safe working environment for stakeholders and clients
• Establish close cooperation with the other managers in setting up and executing contracts with cargo interests, agencies and shipping companies
• Support the CEO in developing the port strategy to further achieve port growth and improvement
• Manage port assets, while ensuring the highest standards of business execution
• Develop and implement cost control measures to foster a cost-conscious culture within the organization
• Identify and capitalize new business opportunities to drive profitability.
As Harbor Master, you will be responsible for overseeing all marine operations within the port. This includes coordinating vessel movements, enforcing maritime regulations, and ensuring the safety of navigation.
You will be tasked with the following main responsibilities:
• Manage traffic control, port rules and regulations, marine services and pilotage to deliver a safe and reliable service to clients within the port area
• Continuously improve the services provided by the Harbor Master’s office to meet client needs
• Maintain close collaboration with the authorities and stakeholders, to increase efficiency and to comply with legislation, both national and international, as required
• Provide nautical feedback to clients and other departments
• Ensure the port is prepared for emergency situations while maintaining the continuity of daily marine operations
Your profile
- Extensive experience in port operations, with a minimum of 10 years of proven success in similar roles. A deep understanding of marine terminal operations is essential
- Strong background in maritime operations with at least 5 years of relevant experience (such as tugboat captain, harbor pilot, or marine engineer). Knowledge of maritime safety regulations and the ability to enforce them is required
- Demonstrated experience in managing harbor traffic and coordinating vessel movements to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Proven capability in handling marine emergencies and managing crisis situations
- Having a problem-solving mindset with excellent planning and organizational skills; you take the initiative to solve problems quickly and efficiently
- Flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and manage complex port operations with agility
- Commitment to staying informed about market innovations and new trends in the industry
- A leader who provides clear guidance and direction to teams, while also acting as a supportive coach to drive continuous growth
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders
- Fluency in English is required.
